Vocational
Education
As children mature in the Eden family, we offer
them vocational training if they are not going on to university.
We feel they need as many options as possible in securing employment
in the Zimbabwean economy so that they will be able to provide for
themselves. We have a number of venues for vocational education:
Hunnington Enterprises is a commercial sewing company
that trains women in commercial sewing and knitting. This enterprise
makes school uniforms, work coveralls, custom clothing, draperies
and upholstery. Women also learn to do handicrafts that are sold
to visitors and tourists.
The Eden Children’s Village Farm is a working
357-acre farm that provides education in commercial farming methods,
as well as food security for our orphans. This farm produces corn,
soybeans, sunflowers, potatoes, onions, and sugar beans. Eden youth
learn how to maintain soil fertility, control weeds and insects,
and manage crops throughout the growing season. Our youth learn
about animal husbandry with our dairy herd, beef herd, laying hens,
broiler chickens, and rabbits. They learn how to optimize production
with proper feeding, and they learn the veterinarian procedures
for disease identification and control.

The Eden Permaculture Project produces fruit and
vegetables in intensive organic methods that provide for our orphans
and staff. Liquid fertilizers are manufactured on-site with animal
waste and composting. Pesticides and fungicides are made from aromatic
herbs that are inter-planted with fruits and vegetables. We are
developing a seed bank of indigenous fruit and vegetable plants
that are open pollinated, and whose seed can be saved from crop
to crop.
The Agape Center is Eden’s food processing
plant. We move a sizable quantity of food in feeding our orphans.
Fresh fruit and vegetables, grains, eggs, and meats are stored and
processed for distribution to our cottages in Doma and nearby Mhangura.
Dairy products are also processed in this facility. Milk is bottled,
and cream is skimmed and made into butter for the orphans. This
facility provides vocational training in food service, distribution,
and inventory control.
The Eden Silviculture Project produces indigenous
tree seedlings for property development and for nursery sales. Eden
youth learn about nursery management, plant propagation, forestry,
and landscaping with this project. The project also produces the
eucalyptus trees we use for the construction of our cottages.
The Eden Horticulture Project supports the Permaculture
and Silviculture projects with the greenhouse, shade house, and
mist propagation beds. Vegetable seedlings are produced, as well
as landscape plants. Flower seed is produced for wholesalers in
Holland.
The Eden Vocational Center is a working mechanic’s
shop with a warehouse for stock feeds, equipment, and furniture.
Eden youth learn how to do welding, mechanics, clerking and inventory
control, furniture repair, and bookkeeping.
The Eden Christian Preschool is an opportunity
for Eden youth to learn about early childhood development, daycare
center operation, and pre-school education.
