Long-Term
Residential Care
Some children come to us needing assistance throughout
childhood, and they require long-term residential care. Children
are placed in cottages with a Mother and an Auntie and family units
of no more than 8 children to maintain some semblance of a normal
family. There are Village Fathers who provide positive male role
models for our children.
Children receive a high level of care in the Children’s
Village. They receive good medical care, nutrition, emotional support,
spiritual support, and education.
Every child has a medical assessment by a doctor
at intake. We make sure they are current on all immunizations. We
are aggressive in treating any type of illness, because we do not
always know the HIV status of a child. With HIV, simple medical
problems can quickly become life threatening. We have found that
a proactive approach to medical care works best in this environment.
Good nutrition is the foundation of good physical
care. Many of our children come to us malnourished, and their complete
recovery is a high priority. Our children receive well-balanced
meals along with vitamin and mineral supplements. Much of our food
stuffs are produced on Eden Children’s Village Farm in Doma.
Children receive emotional support from their Eden
families. All of our children have suffered great losses in the
deaths of their parents and in some cases, their siblings. Our Mothers
and Aunties provide primary emotional support, and our Village Fathers,
staff members, and the local church community, complement the emotional
support for each child.

Our children attend public schools. It is our intention
that they are integrated in their respective communities. Children
who are behind in school, or have learning disabilities are tutored.
Many of our children are far behind in school, and have missed several
years of their education while their parents were dying. We do everything
we can to assure that our children get as much education as possible.
We want them to be able to make choices when they are on their own,
and a good education gives them more options as adults.
We have a strong desire to see that our children
receive spiritual training while in our care. We are convinced that
each child needs a solid Christian foundation in order to become
the best possible citizen of Zimbabwe. Christian morality is woven
throughout life at Eden Children’s Village. We work with each
child to develop a personal relationship with God the Father, and
Jesus Christ.
